In July 2014, three students from the European Master in System Dynamics had the chance to be part of the Global Sustainability Fellows Program, a summer school that described itself as a ‘Transformative, Graduate-Level Learning Experience’. The main purpose of the program was to ’inspire, mobilize and prepare future generations of leaders in all sectors of society who are committed to integrating sustainability concerns into their approach to their chosen disciplines.’

The “SD bible man” during the workshop (as tagged by student Nikola Pucarevic during his live social media updates on the conference)

My experience in the summer SD conference in Delft was of great importance for me, since it introduced me to many people that are working in the field already and it enhanced my network development for my short term work, but also for the mid and long term. I again convinced myself that I am in the right place with a powerful tool, but also that I need to learn other tools to complement my competencies and be able to model our world.

A beautiful, green and Dutch way to head to a conference

System Dynamics Conference in Delft, Netherlands, it is time to think about what remains. It was an event of five intense days: From early morning until sunset there was a program brimful with workshops, poster presentations, lectures and special interest group meetings. People from all walks of life met with open minds – and hearts. Never before had I been to a conference that made contact between people so easy, no matter if you were talking to a first-time attendee or a pioneer of the field.

Happy Earth Overshoot Day

I started this blog out of a passion for connecting and inspiring people and for becoming a better modeler myself. This passion is not an end in itself, despite the joy coming from such social and intellectual activities. Becoming an effective modeler is hardly a childhood’s dream. What did stir me up from as long as I can remember is human struggle – with nature and with each other. Why do some people have to starve when others have so much that they throw it away? Why do we destroy and meddle with nature when the earth is so beautiful? Today is a moment to bring up these questions once more. Today seems just like any other day. Yet something is different. Welcome to Young Modeler

By Angelika Schanda
Located in Nijmegen, Netherlands
European Master in System Dynamics, Class 2013-2015

This is a blog for a young generation of students and practitioners interested in modeling complex problems. Since this blog is started from within the system dynamics community, the content will start out from this perspective. However, others types of modeling and systemic perspectives are equally valuable. As society becomes more interconnected and future challenges become more complex, an integrative approach to solving problems is needed. Integration of modeling approaches, model scales, decision making tools, issues and stakeholders are all relevant topics for the upcoming modeler generations.

What content can you expect from this blog? The answer is, don’t expect, suggest. This blog is a platform for you. That is, the young modeler out there who is struggling with methodological problems, with translating ‘soft’ factors into modeling language, who faces communication challenges when working with a client, who had the opportunity to do an internship in an amazing company with experience valuable for other beginners, who wants to make sure insights from conferences are not forgotten once back in their work life and much more.

Write about it. Start new conversations in the community. Discover what others are thinking about, working with, find peers to learn from or even to start a business with. As they say, the only limits are the limits of your imagination. So take your imagination beyond the limits of your own modeler life and start sharing your stories.

Happy modeling, reading and writing!
